Momoland is an event series curated by visual artist and musician Momo Pixel. She tasked me with creating a virtual reality extension for the fourth event, drawing inspiration from a wide range of Momo Pixel's past pixel art. Using Google Tiltbrush and Gravity Sketch, I crafted a crystallized neon-filled metropolis for this first iteration of the project. We plan to collaborate on updated versions of VR Momoland for future events, as well as a version for eventual publication on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Here's a quick look at the event where we debuted the experience.

Creating Momoland VR
By default I begin conceptualization of a VR world in VR. Specifically, I start by doing 3D sketches in Google Tiltbrush, creating a rough outline of layout and scale. After the sketch phase, I bring the 3D sketches into unity to test how it feels to be in the world from that perspective . It’s important to experience your 3D layout in VR as early as possible. After layout I focus on specific asset creation; buildings, ships, skyboxes etc. Finally, it’s time to apply materials and shaders.
Underrepresented Voices
Since day 1 of my VR journey I’ve had a commitment to supporting underrepresented creators in technology. Far prior to this project I had made a point to assure Momo that if she ever wanted to do something with VR that I would help. As we continue this collaboration I hope to become a resource to any unheard voices looking to use VR in their work. We hope that experiences like Momoland will invite our fellow creators closer in to the industry.
