The Concept

The Culture Series is an art show series designed to give artists of color a platform to express themselves, curated by filmmaker Jeredon O’Connor. For the second show — entitled Primary — I presented the three primary colors as three separate VR worlds, each accessible through a color-coded mobile headset placed on a pedestal in the gallery.

Accessibility vs. Immersion

The room-scale HTC Vive is more immersive but incompatible with large crowds — slow throughput, one in one out, and head straps that couldn’t accommodate a range of hairstyles. What initially felt like a sacrifice of immersion proved to shine in accessibility. Three color-coded headsets sat freely on a pedestal. No attendant required. During the opening I watched from afar as group after group picked them up and shared them between each other. The number of people who saw the work in a few hours beat all of my previous demoing capabilities combined.
